Jain Shrines in Karnataka

Shravanabelagola, one of the oldest and the most important Jain pilgrim centre in India is 48 km from Hassan. This is the site of the massive 17 metre high monolithic status of Lord Gommateshwara (Bahubali). Believed to be the world’s tallest monolith, the 1000 year old statue, atop the Vindhyagiri Hill, personifies simplicity and serenity. Once in 12 years, the Mahamastakabhisheka is held, during which the statue is anointed with milk, yoghurt, honey, ghee, jaggery, sandalwood, saffron, etc.

Lord Bahubali statues are also found in Karkala (20 km north of Moodabidri), Venur (50 km north-east of Mangalore) and Dharmasthala (75 km east of Mangalore).
