Indian Temples and Shrines – Pilgrimage Centers

India has a proud heritage of pilgrimage centers. It has several places of religious significance for the Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, Jews and Zoroastrians. Every shrine has its own importance. There is a long list of revered places that covers all the religions and faiths. Temples are found in almost every part of our country. Some are plain and simple while others are highly complex and ornate.

All these shrines have distinct features and characteristics depending upon the periods, materials used for construction or specific religions. Broadly temples are divided into three main types – Dravida, Nagara and Vesara. The northern style is known as Nagara. The southern style is known as the Dravida and the Chalukyan style as the Vesara, which combines the first two styles.
